This is a new, exciting technology which is present only in handful centres in India and only few people have the expertise to use it. Its role is to evaluate the small intestine for any pathology such as polyps, tumours, bleeding points, ulcers, strictures etc.
Like the endoscopy and colonoscopy, it is inserted either through mouth (antegrade enteroscopy) or anus (retrograde enteroscopy), under general anaesthesia, after giving bowel preparation to ensure a clean intestine. The enteroscope is fitted with a motorized spiral overlay tube which helps propel the scope through the small intestine. It is a remarkable instrument as it allows to scan the entire small intestine (up to 6 metres or 22 feet long in adults) in less than an hour.
The movement can be controlled with help of backward and forward rotating paddles. We can stop bleeding points using laser, haemostasis clips and injections. Also, small intestinal strictures can be dilated using the scope.
