EUS stands for Endoscopic Ultra-Sonography. It is a specialized endoscopy done through the mouth, usually under sedation. As the name suggests, it is internal sonography of the upper gastrointestinal tract and helps in visualizing organs such as liver, spleen, pancreas, gall bladder, pancreatic and bile ducts, kidneys, adrenal glands, blood vessels such as portal and superior mesenteric veins, aorta and its main branches etc.
It helps in diagnosing conditions such as gallstones, common bile duct obstruction, pancreatitis, portal venous pathology, liver disease, types of pancreatic cysts etc.
It can also be used to take liquid samples using a very thin needle from the various organs (called FNAC- Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) and even biopsies.
It can be used to drain collections around the pancreas such as pancreatic pseudocysts.
