ERCP

ERCP stands for Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography. It is a specialized endoscopy performed through the mouth (like upper GI endoscopy) using a side viewing endoscope. This scope is designed to perform Services on the pancreatobiliary system i.e. pancreas and pancreatic duct, common bile duct and the common opening called as papilla or ampulla.

This procedure is usually performed in patients who have gallstones in the bile duct causing obstruction and jaundice, blockage in pancreatic duct causing pancreatitis, to aid in removal of the stones. It is also used for stent placements. Stents can be plastic or metallic. Depending on the underlying problem, we put either metal or plastic stents (sometimes more than one).

This procedure is usually performed under sedation and sometimes under general anaesthesia.
