An UPPER GI ENDOSCOPY (also called gastroscopy or OGD) is a test to evaluate the upper part of the gut including the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum). It is a thin tube with a camera attached to it, which allows up to inspect the upper gut. We offer sedation to the patient, so there is no pain or discomfort and patient is sleeping through out the test. Generally, it takes 10 minutes to finish the entire procedure. It is commonly recommended for patients with reflux symptoms, acidity, bloating and gas, anemia, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing and passage of blood either from mouth or in stools etc.
We take samples (biopsies) to rule out infection, allergies and other diseases such as cancer. The endoscopy can be used to diagnose conditions such as hiatus hernia, reflux oesophagitis, peptic ulcer, stricture, achalasia cardia, celiac disease, neuroendocrine tumours and h pylori infection
A COLONOSCOPY (also called as ileocolonoscopy) is similar to upper GI endoscopy. However, it is done through the anus (lower end of the gut) to evaluate the large intestine (colon) and the connecting lower end of small intestine, called the terminal ileum.
This procedure takes around 20 minutes and done under sedation. We instruct patients to drink laxatives, day before the procedure, to empty the intestines completely. This allows us to have good views of the intestines.
This test is recommended for people with unexplained anaemia and weight loss; change in stool passing habit, unexplained diarrhoea, blood in stools, abdominal pain, new onset constipation, family history of colon cancer, polyp surveillance.
Both Services can be used for treatment of GI bleeding, polyp removal, stricture dilatation, stent placement. In addition, endoscopy is used for varices treatment including banding and sclerotherapy and PEG tube placement for feeding purposes.
