Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive test to evaluate the small intestine. A miniature camera in the shape of transparent capsule (around 2cm in length) is swallowed by the patient. As it travels through the small intestine, it clicks thousands of photographs, which are digitally transferred to a recorder, that the patient carries on himself or herself throughout the procedure. The entire test lasts for 8 to 10 hours.
The photos are then uploaded to a computer after the end of the test and studied to look for any small intestinal problem such as ulcers, infection, tumours, strictures, bleeding vessels etc.
The capsule is passes out in the stools at the end of the test.
