ESWL

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive treatment used to fragment large pancreatic duct stones into smaller pieces using focused shock waves. These fragments can then pass spontaneously or be removed endoscopically through ERCP. ESWL is particularly useful in patients with chronic pancreatitis and obstructing pancreatic duct stones that cause pain or ductal obstruction. Its major advantages include avoiding surgical intervention, effective fragmentation of large and hard stones, improved pancreatic duct drainage, and facilitating subsequent endoscopic stone extraction. ESWL can reduce the need for complex surgery, promote symptom relief, and improve quality of life in appropriately selected patients.

We use The Dornier Delta III Pro which is an advanced extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) system designed to fragment stones using focused shock waves. Its key advantages include the proven EMSE 180 shock wave technology, OptiCouple® technology for improved energy transmission, and a flexible therapy head that facilitates accurate stone targeting across multiple positions. Advanced flat-panel imaging provides clear visualisation, while dual imaging allows stone localisation using X-ray, ultrasound, or both. Ultrasound-guided treatment can avoid radiation exposure during stone targeting. The system also features an ergonomic patient table and integrated controls for efficient workflow. These features make it a promising option for pancreatic stone fragmentation in appropriately selected patients.
